Just north of Pierce Mill the Western Ridge Trail takes a steep climb to the highest points of Rock Creek Park. At just about 5 kilometers round trip to reach the Site of Civil War Fort DeRussy, you can take in a sunset over the western horizon and make it back to the parking lot without breaking out the headlamp. The swindling sunlight highlights the diversity of each season in the park, whether dappled light through the shaded canopy or stark shadows waiting for the return of longer days, this section of the trail does not disappoint.
